The Essence of the Tantrik Tradition
A Six-Part Series
Instructor Christopher Tompkins has 3 degrees in Religion, including a Master’s Degree from Harvard and a Master’s in Sanskrit from UC Berkeley. His Ph.D. dissertation is on the Tantrik origins of Yoga.
Saiva Tantrism is arguably the most profound philosophical and spiritual tradition to have developed out of India. “Tantra” derives from the Sanskrit root “tan” which means to “expand.” Thus, a common depiction of the Absolute throughout the various schools or systems of Tantra (Spanda, Agama, Kaula, etc.) is a universally dynamic one. The human being is seen as a manifestation of this dynamism.
The principle of creation that emanates from the Absolute field of Universal Consciousness (Shiva) is feminine, and is called Shakti (power/energy). Thus, the Goddess, representing the creative and variegated power of consciousness, manifests as all of the multitudinous forms of the universe. Her manifestation, of course, includes the human being. The Yoga of Tantra, therefore, is focused on awakening dormant aspects of subtle body Goddess energy (prana-shakti) in order to effect a transformation of our own consciousness, one that expands our awareness until an experiential reunion with our true Shiva (universal) nature occurs.
